Sekundarschule Niederrhein, Geldern

Sekundarschule Niederrhein was founded at the beginning of the school term 2014/15 as an educational institution where students of all abilities learn together for a longer period of time. The school cares for students of a particularly strong diversity, including: a) Students with a statement of “special educational needs”, most of them with either social and emotional difficulties, with learning problems or communication problems b) Students with a whole range of recommendations for all types of middle - or as they are called in Germany: secondary - schools c) A substantial number of culturally and linguistically diverse students from migrant and refugee backgrounds with no or very low German language skills. In its fourth year of existence, Sekundarschule Niederrhein has 14 classes in grades 5 – 8 with a total of 365 students who are taught by 33 teachers. Teachers are supported by a social worker plus several external assistants who offer clubs in the field of art, drama, sports etc. Starting with grade 7 students are placed into groups defined by their ability levels in Mathematics and English, in German starting with grade 8 and in Natural Sciences in grade 9. Earliest at the end of grade 9, but most frequently after grade 10, students can get different types of school leaving certificates, depending on their examination performance, which allow them to either start a vocational training or continue schooling in an institution of higher education.
